West Sussex Catch Report - 16th November 2025
Report by David Lewis
Good evening, luckily for the time of year the fishing locally remains good with plenty of species still worth targeting, both big and small, plus Bass continue to show with decent numbers of sizable fish reported plus the usual Congers and Rays, there certainly is enough to merit getting the rods out and giving it a try.
Here are Worthing high tides times for the week ahead:
- Monday 17th November: 09:14 (5.6m), 21:33 (5.4m)
- Tuesday 18th November: 09:51 (5.7m), 22:10 (5.6m)
- Wednesday 19th November: 10:27 (5.8m) 22:45 (5.7m)
- Thursday 20th November: 11:00 (5.9m), 23:21 (5.7m)
- Friday 21st November: 11:31 (5.8m), 23:55 (5.7m)
- Saturday 22nd November: 12:02 (5.8m)
The weather last week started off with strong winds and plenty of rain although as the weekend approached the weather improved with lighter winds and even some brief sunshine. The sea has calmed and is clearing at some venues although inshore still holds colour as does shallower beaches.
The past week has seen plenty of sizable Bass caught from Worthing Pier as well as some local beaches with majority of fish around 2 to 3lb although the odd bigger fish has also shown recently and local rivers are producing some nice fish in amongst vast numbers of smaller fish. Venues where there is good clarity could be worth luring whereas when the water is dirty baits work better. Around this time of year, it is not uncommon for the odd double to be caught and usually live baiting Whiting accounts for the bigger fish.
Good numbers of Congers have been caught this week with some fish over 10lb with Worthing Pier and Brighton Marina the venues where better fish are likely. Dirty water or fishing in darkness offers the best chance of catching an Eel and remember to bring a drop net and use suitable tackle for targeting them when fishing from structures such as Pier and Marina. Whiting can work well as bait both dead and alive.
Thornback Rays seem to be increasing in catches lately and a decent sized fish was caught from Shoreham Arm this week in the daytime and beaches such as Hove, Seaford, Eastbourne, Bognor and Pagham all offer a realistic chance of catching one especially on evening tides. Undulate Rays seem scarce with occasional fish showing but Small Eyed Rays have shown in small numbers from Brighton Marina and a couple from the beaches.
Dogfish remain around in numbers at night and during the day if the water is coloured and the odd small Bull Huss is a possible catch.
Codling don’t seem to have been reported much bar the odd fish caught from Shoreham Harbour and Worthing Pier recently, but it is still possible a few could yet show before the end of the year.
Again, Whiting although present at most venues they are still not about in the vast shoals usually expected at this time of year. Catches certainly vary with more fish at some venues and just odd ones at others but it shouldn’t be too long before the expected large shoals appear. One bonus with the presence of Whiting is the likelihood other species such as larger Bass and Congers will be there to eat them.
Anglers wishing to target flatfish should find a few Flounders from the beaches and rivers, Plaice could show around Shoreham and Brighton as well as a few Soles in darkness. Dabs should show from beaches mainly in East Sussex.
Other species featuring in catches locally include Silver Eels, small Hounds, Gilt Head Bream, Wrasse, plus some decent sized Pouting have shown. At the Marina this weekend a few Squid have been caught. It is still possible the odd summer species could appear although in small numbers.
