West Sussex Catch Report - 23rd November 2025
Good evening, last week the fishing locally could be described as “hard work”, this was mainly due to large amounts of Squid moving inshore which often has a negative effect on the fishing but there was still some good and interesting catches and with the weather and sea conditions changing this weekend we are already seeing a vast improvement to the fishing so why not get out and give it ago.
Here are Worthing high tides times for the week ahead:
- Monday 24th November: 01:01 (5.6m), 13:06 (5.5m)
- Tuesday 25th November: 01:36 (5.4m), 13:43 (5.3m)
- Wednesday 26th November: 02:18 (5.2m) 14:26 (5.1m)
- Thursday 27th November: 03:06 (5.0m), 15:20 (4.8m)
- Friday 28th November: 04:10 (4.9m), 16:34 (4.7m)
- Saturday 29th November: 05:21 (4.9m), 17:49 (4.7m)
Last week the weather was mainly cold, dry with a chilly northerly wind and the sea was calm and very clear but towards the weekend the winds switched round from south, increased in strength, plus plenty of rain and the sea has turned choppy and coloured.
Whilst the sea was calm and clear last week Squid returned inshore in decent numbers and generally were of a good size. Better catches were made during darkness from venues such as Brighton Marina and Worthing Pier, whilst a few showed in the daytime too.
The winds this weekend have seen some decent sized Congers featuring in catches with fish taken from Worthing Pier and Brighton Marina and they will also likely be caught from most venues while the water remains coloured or by fishing during darkness. Dirty water and choppy seas often see the bigger fish move in while when the water clears the only Congers showing seem to be tiny straps. Remember to bring a drop net and use suitable tackle for targeting them when fishing from structures such as Pier and Marina. Whiting can work well as bait both dead and alive.
Bass continue to be caught throughout the region from both the shore and local rivers with still good numbers of sizable fish regularly being caught. Fish commonly seem to be in the 2-3lb region with the occasional Bass around the 5lb mark. During the occasions at venues where there was good clarity it has been worth luring whereas when the water is dirty baits work better.
Dogfish are still present with less fish caught in clearer water but showing at night but due to the winds this weekend they will be caught in the daytime too and increasing numbers and the odd small Bull Huss is a possible catch.
There still seems to be a lack of Whiting inshore and although they are being caught locally, they have yet to arrive in the vast shoals usually present at this time of year. Codlings are also scarce with only a couple of fish caught in the last fortnight but a change in conditions could see the occasional one show. Some Pouting are likely whilst the water is choppy and coloured.
Presently there seems to be 3 species of Rays which can be caught locally with Thornback Rays the most common along with a few Undulates and the odd Small Eyed. Venues worth targeting them include Brighton, Hove, Bognor and Pagham.
Some decent Plaice showed with ideal conditions along with a few Flounders, Dabs and odd Sole. Local rivers are yet to produce the usual good catches of Flounders, but small numbers are showing despite the presence of lots of small Bass and Eels taking the baits aimed for flatties.
The settled conditions for much of last week and calm and clear water saw a few summer species caught but in very small numbers including Garfish, Mackerel, Wrasse, Bream and Gurnards. Herring were also taken at Newhaven and Brighton with small bait fish still visible at many venues.
