West Sussex Catch Report - 26th October 2025
Report by David Lewis
Good evening, despite at times with the poor weather, the fishing has been good and there have been some quality fish caught including the odd surprise and conditions locally are ideal for catching some of the bigger species which move in whilst there still remains plenty of other species of various sizes worth targeting so why not get out and give it ago.
Here are Worthing high tides times for the week ahead:
- Monday 27th October: 01:47 (5.3m), 13:55 (5.2m)
- Tuesday 28th October: 02:26 (5.0m), 14:36 (4.9m)
- Wednesday 29th October: 03:17 (4.7m) 15:35 (4.5m)
- Thursday 30th October: 04:38 (4.5m), 17:12 (4.3m)
- Friday 31st October: 06:05 (4.5m), 18:38 (4.5m)
- Saturday 1st November: 07:15 (4.9m), 19:41 (4.9m)
As expected for the time of year the weather certainly has been mixed with rain, cloud and even some sunshine and the winds have been strong at times although the weekend was reasonably decent. The sea is coloured inshore and has been mostly choppy all week and next week the weather is predicted for more of the same so the fishing should remain like it has for the past week or so.
The best catch of the week without a doubt was a 10lb 13oz Spurdog caught from Worthing Pier this weekend. This is an extremely rare catch in Sussex and again proves you never know what could appear on the end of your line at this time of year.
Whiting have finally moved in although in not huge numbers yet and they have shown from Worthing and Shoreham and make an excellent bait for targeting Congers.
Dogfish have also been prolific and have been caught throughout the region both during the day and at night as the water is coloured and odd small Bull Huss have appeared. A few Silver Eels have been caught from the beaches and Harbour and Pouting have shown.
This time of year, can produce a few Sole and Brighton Marina and Shoreham have seen steady numbers of fish at night and a few in the daytime as well to mainly worm baits. A few Plaice have also been caught along with the odd Flounder and numbers of Dabs should slowly increase in the next few weeks. Local rivers should produce a few Flounders, but the best fishing will be likely December and January time.
Conditions have been good for Bass and fish have been caught locally mainly to baits and at this time of year is usually when the odd double is most likely to appear normally to live baits such as Whiting. Fish to 4lb have consistently shown from Shoreham West arm all year and is likely to continue for the next month or so. Some anglers have reported some nice fish caught fishing low tide during darkness when there is a surf.
Although there are not too many Codlings being caught locally the ones that have are of a good size. Realistically they could appear anywhere locally with black lug and squid worth using to target them.
Worthing Pier is a venue ideal for targeting a big Conger with big baits and live Whiting so remember to bring a drop net. There has been plenty of straps caught and the beaches have seen the occasional double figure caught but the next few weeks often is when the biggest Eels often move inshore throughout Sussex. Brighton Marina is also a venue where good Eels have shown this summer.
Most of the Rays caught recently have been small Thornback Ray with the odd, better sized fish in amongst them and there is always a chance of an Undulate especially around Bognor, Pagham and Selsey.
Because the water has been coloured for most of the week there has been barely any of the usual summer species caught bar the occasional Gilt Head Bream, Mullet and small Hounds. Squid will likely return once the weather and seas settle down and clarity improves.
