West Sussex Fishing Report - 8th June 2025
Report by David Lewis
Good evening, despite some challenging conditions regarding both the weather and the weed, there has been some quality catches made throughout the region and Worthing Pier has fished extremely well and is arguably the inform venue and hopefully with a better weather forecast for the forthcoming week, the beaches should also produce good results so why not get out and give it a try.
Here are Worthing high tides times for the week ahead:
- Monday 9th June: 10:54 (5.2m), 23:10 (5.5m)
- Tuesday 10th June: 11:34 (5.4m), 23:47 (5.6m)
- Wednesday 11th June: 12:13 (5.5m)
- Thursday 12th June: 00:22 (5.6m), 12:50 (5.6m)
- Friday 13th June: 00:58 (5.6m), 13:28 (5.6m)
- Saturday 14th June: 01:35 (5.6m), 14:07 (5.6m)
The weather for much of the past week has consisted of strong south westerly winds, long spells of cloud and occasional rain and the sea has been choppy or rough with the water coloured. Next week the weather is predicted to improve with lighter winds, warmer temperatures with plenty of sunshine. At times some beaches have been weedy, yet others are weed free and producing good catches.
It has been a good week for catching Smoothounds and lots of fish have shown with Worthing Pier seeing good reports plus the beaches when conditions have eased. Most fish seem to be in the 6lb to 9lb bracket and presently the bigger doubles have not shown in any numbers but could do within the next few weeks. Currently most venues in West Sussex could hold reasonable numbers of Hounds in the present conditions.
Despite not being considered the best conditions for Stingrays there have been a few caught lately mainly from the beaches plus a small one was caught from Worthing Pier. Once the beaches become fishable again expect a few to be caught from local beaches such as Goring, Ferring, Kingston Gorse and East Preston. There has been a significant increase in the numbers of Undulate Rays caught with a good amount caught from Worthing Pier and a few from beaches such as Selsey, Pagham and Bognor.
Conditions have been good for targeting Bass to baits and some nice fish have been caught in the last few days with the Harbour and Pier seeing some superb fish. Bass can be caught in all depths at both high and low tide in very shallow water especially with a decent surf. Lure fishing should produce once the water clarity improves.
The occasional Conger has been caught with the Marina, Southwick and the Pier seeing the odd fish caught along with a few straps.
Due to the rough seas, strong winds and poor clarity most of the smaller summer species have not shown this week, and some venues have been forced to close so catches of species such as Black Bream, Mackerel, Mullet etc should recommence once the water clears and the sea calms which should be within the next few days.
Not many anglers have braved the weather to target flatfish, but a few Founders have been caught from Kingston Beach plus a few small Sole and Plaice to worm baits from the Harbour and sheltered beaches.
Other species which have figured in local catches include lots of Dogfish, small Bull Huss, even some Whiting, a few Pout and Silver Eels.
