West Sussex Fishing Report - 29th June 2025

West Sussex Fishing Report - 29th June 2025

Report by David Lewis

Good evening, admittedly the fishing during past week has been rather challenging mainly due to seaweed hampering some venues but the anglers battling through it are still finding some decent fish and hopefully conditions will improve during the forthcoming week and with smaller tides more venues should become fishable so why not get the rods out and give it a try.

Here are Worthing high tides times for the week ahead:

  • Monday 30th June: 03:23 (5.6m), 15:55 (5.6m)
  • Tuesday 1st July: 04:07 (5.3m), 16:38 (5.4m)
  • Wednesday 2nd July: 04:52 (5.1m) 17:22 (5.2m)
  • Thursday 3rd July: 05:40 (4.8m), 18:10 (5.0m)
  • Friday 4th July:  06:34 (4.6m), 19:06 (4.8m)
  • Saturday 5th July: 07:37 (4.4m), 20:07 (4.7m)

The weather for the past week has been mixed with plenty of cloud and strong winds but the weekend has seen more sunshine, easing winds and increasing temperatures. Next week continues warm till turning cooler midweek onwards with light winds.

A disadvantage of weeks and weeks of settled weather, calm and clear seas plus warm temperatures is that the seaweed grows at a rapid rate and once the strong winds arrive much of this weed is ripped from the seabed and deposited on local beaches. Smaller tides and lighter winds could mean more areas become fishable. If beaches are weedy fishing from structures such as Worthing Pier, Shoreham Harbour or Brighton Marina can give you access to water beyond the weed.

Some decent sized Bass have been caught throughout the region mostly to baits but venues with good water clarity will see fish taken on lures. Fishing low tide can avoid some of the weed, wading out with good water clarity helpful. Bass can show from most venues and local rivers and baits worth using can differ dependant on the venue.

Mackerel have shown from Brighton Marina east arm with some reasonable catches made but most venues are still not producing catches which can commonly be made at this time of year. Shoreham west arm can be worthwhile either fishing dawn or dusk and there is a chance of a few Scad appearing maybe with the odd Garfish.

Recent night sessions on the Pier have seen numerous small Congers being caught and most are just 1 to 2lb in weight although Brighton Marina has produced both better numbers of fish and size of fish with high pegs on the East arm during the daytime worth targeting them with fish baits.

Selsey or Bracklesham should see a few Smoothounds and the possibility of a Tope showing up. Majority of Smoothounds which have been caught have shown in darkness, but they are likely to reappear in the daytime when the sea is choppy and has some colour. Some venues currently hold Smoothounds but are very weedy.

Again, there have been some good-sized Undulate Rays caught but due to the weed catches are reduced as some popular venues have been hard to fish. Once the weed eases, Shoreham, Lancing, Bognor, Aldwick and Selsey should all produce fish in darkness. A small Stingray was caught on Hove beach last week and one also at Bognor and smaller tides towards the end of the week could see a few landed at venues between Ferring and Climping. The odd small Thornback have also been caught mainly from East Sussex beaches.

Golden Grey Mullet can be targeted from Kingston beach and Shoreham west arm using red rag as well as the Burrells on Shoreham beach when conditions are right. Other species of Mullet can be caught from the local rivers as well as from the Marina.

If you wish to target flatfish best venues include Shoreham Harbour, Brighton Marina and Kingston Beach. The Harbour and Marina should see Plaice and some Sole and Flounders, whilst Kingston Beach often sees good reports of Flounders by anglers fishing with red rag baits.

The other species which have figured in local catches include Red Mullet, Wrasse, Gurnards, Dogfish, Pout and Silver Eels.
