West Sussex Fishing Report - 24th August 2025

Good evening, we hope you are all enjoying the bank holiday weekend and managing to get in plenty of fishing. Although the fishing is certainly not hectic there is currently a vast variety of species worth targeting locally with catches of Codling on the increase within the last few evenings and with the arrival of Squid there is enough to keep anglers interested so why not get out and give it a try

Here are Worthing high tides times for the week ahead:

  • Monday 25th August: 01:15 (6.0m), 13:41 (6.1m)
  • Tuesday 26th August: 01:48 (6.0m), 14:12 (6.1m)
  • Wednesday 27th August: 02:19 (5.9m) 14:41 (5.9m)
  • Thursday 28th August: 02:51 (5.7m), 15:09 (5.8m)
  • Friday 29th August:  03:20 (5.5m), 15:37 (5.5m)
  • Saturday 30th August: 03:52 (5.1m), 16:09 (5.1m)

During the past week the weather has remained settled with plenty of sunshine and mostly light winds although they picked up briefly Sunday. The weather forecast predicts the winds slightly increasing in the forthcoming week.

The calm seas, light winds and clear water have been ideal conditions for Squid, and they showed up locally in reasonable numbers from Worthing Pier on the evening high tides and they are also likely to be present at Shoreham Harbour and Brighton Marina.

Codling have made an appearance during darkness in the last few days although most fish are small there is the occasional better fish reported. Venues worth trying includes Hove, Shoreham, and Pagham but they are a possible catch anywhere with preferred baits being blacks, lugworm and squid.

The catches of sizable Bass continue with a few fish caught from Worthing Pier, Shoreham Harbour and Brighton Marina. Lure fishing is worthwhile with fish likely at dawn and dusk and low tiding around Worthing tends to produce a few fish in the right conditions.

A few Smoothounds are still around, most of which are small but a good fish of 12lb plus was caught Wednesday evening on Worthing Pier. Selsey and Bracklesham could see a few fish at night with the possibility of Tope also.

Mullet can be caught at this time of year from many venues with large amounts of fish in the local rivers whilst they can also be caught from the Marina, Harbour and beaches at Shoreham. Red rag baits fished from Shoreham beaches such as the Burrells should find a few Golden Greys and Thin and Thick lipped Mullet will be plentiful in the Adur and Arun and occasionally from the Marina and Harbour walls.

Black Bream can be found at most venues both during the day and at night with fish from the Marina, Harbour and Widewater beaches of mixed sizes to most baits. Gilt Heads can be caught at Chichester, Climping and Kingston Beach.

Anglers wishing to target flatfish will find Plaice, Flounders and Sole locally and for even Top Knots can be caught from Brighton Marina. Shoreham through to Brighton will produce a few Plaice in the daytime with Sole showing during darkness along with the odd Flounder.

Scads returned in numbers, again at night from Shoreham Harbour and Worthing Pier but Mackerel again seem very scarce with odd catches likely from the Marina and Harbour and it should not be too long till Garfish return inshore.

Rays of various sizes are being caught although most are on the small side with Thornbacks and Undulates showing on the night tides from venues such as Hove, Shoreham, Bognor and Pagham. There remains a possibility of catching a small Stinger with likely venues between Ferring and Climping.

Other species which are being caught frequently include Gurnards, Red Mullet, Wrasse, Pout, Whiting, Congers and Silver Eels, Blennies etc.
