West Sussex Fishing Report - 22nd June 2025
Report by David Lewis
Good evening, arguably the weather can be considered better than the fishing during the past week but changing tactics and targeting different species will often mean there is still some good fishing on offer locally and with evening tides coming up hopefully some of the bigger species which showed the week previous can make a return so why not get out and give it ago for yourself.
Here are Worthing high tides times for the week ahead:
- Monday 23rd June: 09:50 (5.5m), 22:17 (5.8m)
- Tuesday 24th June: 10:48 (5.7m), 23:11 (5.9m)
- Wednesday 25th June: 11:47 (5.8m)
- Thursday 26th June: 00:05 (6.0m), 12:44 (6.0m)
- Friday 27th June: 00:59 (6.0m), 13:39 (6.0m)
- Saturday 28th June: 01:49 (5.9m), 14:28 (5.9m)
The weather for most of the past week has been sunny, very warm with generally light winds although it increased this weekend. The sea has been very calm with good water clarity then turning choppy on Sunday. Next weeks weather is for sunshine and cooler temperatures with occasional brisk south westerly winds.
Conditions have been ideal for targeting Bass with lures with some fish caught through low water as well as high with dawn and dusk producing the best results. Bass can also be caught on a wide variety of baits during the summer months and different baits and tactics at certain times can be the difference between catching and not catching. Live baiting can be successful using Mackerel or Pout etc.
Due to the weather the majority of Smoothounds which have been caught have shown in darkness, but they are likely to reappear in the daytime when the sea is choppy and has some colour. Selsey and Bracklesham could see a Tope caught as well as Hounds.
A few Rays have been caught and again due to the water clarity most catches have been made in darkness including some decent sized Undulate Rays from Shoreham, Lancing and Bognor. A few small Thornbacks have been caught randomly throughout the region and the species of Ray which does often show in daytime in clear water is Stingrays and a couple of small ones have been caught from Ferring and East Preston.
Black Bream figured in catches throughout the region and fish are still of a decent size and venues to target them include Brighton Marina, Shoreham Harbour and Widewater beach. The occasional Gilt Head Bream have been caught with small ones often caught from Kingston Beach as well as the odd one from the beaches.
Small Congers are still being caught at night with Brighton Marina seeing a few better sized Eels from the high pegs on the East arm during the daytime.
Mackerel have made an appearance in decent numbers with fish being caught from Shoreham west arm and Brighton Marina as well as some East Sussex beaches. It should not be too long before Scads start to appear locally and will be caught mainly in darkness and dawn and dusk and often caught in amongst the Mackerel shoals.
With calm and clear seas Mullet have been spotted swimming around structures such as Worthing Pier as well as in numbers in the local rivers. Kingston Beach has produced a few Golden Grey Mullet to red rag baits and other beaches such as the Burrells are also likely to see them show in the right conditions.
Shoreham and Brighton are venues to target flatfish with Plaice; Flounders and a few Soles caught mainly to worm baits. Flounders can be caught in good numbers from Kingston Beach; Plaice will show in the daytime from the Harbour and Marina with the odd Sole being caught at night.
The other species which have figured in local catches include Gurnards, Dogfish, Pout and Silver Eels.
