West Sussex Fishing Report - 1st June 2025
Report by David Lewis
Good evening, some decent fishing can be found locally for anglers venturing out enduring the weed brought in by the recent strong winds with plenty of Smoothounds to catch, good sized Bream plus there is a vast variety in terms of species on offer, both big and small so why not get the rods out and give a go.
Here are Worthing high tides times for the week ahead:
- Monday 2nd June: 04:34 (5.1m), 17:13 (5.2m)
- Tuesday 3rd June: 05:34 (4.8m), 18:11 (5.0m)
- Wednesday 4th June: 06:39 (4.6m), 19:15 (4.9m)
- Thursday 5th June: 07:44 (4.6m), 20:13 (4.9m)
- Friday 6th June: 08:41 (4.7m), 21:04 (5.0m)
- Saturday 7th June: 09:29 (4.8m), 21:49 (5.2m)
Midweek saw strong south westerly winds which made the sea both rough and coloured and as expected at this time of year brought in the seaweed too but although a pain at times it is still manageable and differs from venue to venue. The water clarity is slowly improving with coloured water inshore with clearer water just beyond. The unsettled weather looks set to continue next week with brisk winds still predicted.
Conditions have been ideal for Smoothounds and fish have been caught throughout the region. Nighttime tides have seen more fish although when the water is dirty, they will be caught in the daytime too. Majority of the better sized fish have been caught from Bognor to Selsey. Anglers targeting Hounds from Bracklesham or Selsey could get a bonus Tope with a couple caught in recent weeks.
Again, decent sized Black Bream have been caught especially from Brighton Marina, Shoreham Harbour, Widewater beach and a few from Worthing Pier. Ideally smaller hooks and short snoods will improve your chances of hooking Bream bites.
Anglers wishing to target flatfish are still finding plenty of Plaice with a mixture of both sizable and undersized fish along with a few Dabs, Flounders and Sole. Worm baits will catch majority of flatties with Shoreham and Brighton best venues to target them.
Despite good conditions very few decent Congers appeared although Shoreham Harbour and Brighton Marina are the venues where fish have shown most frequently recently.
The odd Mackerel were caught last week and have finally shown from Worthing Pier but again Brighton Marina or Shoreham Harbour are the venues where catches are more likely.
During the last fortnight a few Stingrays have been caught locally around the 10lb mark from Ferring and East Preston usually on the smaller tides. Lately the best of the local Ray catches seems to be made from Bognor and Pagham with some good-sized Thornbacks and Undulates caught recently. Hove and Seaford can also produce a few Thornbacks with nighttime tides offering best chance to catch one.
Bass have been caught to a wide range of baits and even to lures when the water clarity is good. There have been good numbers of sizable fish caught as well as increasing numbers of Schoolies. When the sea is choppy Bass can often be caught at low water when there is a decent surf.
Other species likely to figure in local catches include Dogfish, Wrasse, Mullet, Pollock, Gurnard, Garfish, Herring, Smelt, Red Mullet, Blennies, Bullheads, and Pout.
