West Sussex Fishing Report - 15th June 2025
Report by David Lewis
Good evening, there continues to be some very good catches made locally during the past week with plenty of Hounds and Rays being caught and most of the smaller summer species are starting to figure in catches again so there really is a great variety for anglers in Sussex to target at present so why not get the rods out and join in the fun.
Here are Worthing high tides times for the week ahead:
- Monday 16th June: 02:57 (5.4m), 15:34 (5.5m)
- Tuesday 17th June: 03:44 (5.3m), 16:25 (5.4m)
- Wednesday 18th June: 04:40 (5.2m), 17:22 (5.3m)
- Thursday 19th June: 05:43 (5.1m), 18:22 (5.3m)
- Friday 20th June: 06:47 (5.1m), 19:23 (5.3m)
- Saturday 21st June: 07:49 (5.1m), 20:23 (5.5m)
The weather has been mixed for much of the past week with wind at the start of last week which then eased towards the weekend before picking up again during the last couple of days. The sea started off with colour which then cleared out before colouring up again slightly. There is some seaweed, but anglers have managed to fish through it and catch fish, and it can vary by sea state and venue. Next week the weather forecast is predicted to improve with light winds, warm temperatures and plenty of sunshine.
Smoothounds have again been caught throughout the region in good numbers for much of the week with fish mostly in the 6 to 9lb bracket with the odd double. Worthing Pier has fished well when the water is coloured as well as in darkness and local beaches such as Widewater, Ferring, Aldwick have produced in the daytime too. Selsey has seen a few bigger fish to around 17lb and anglers fishing either Selsey or Bracklesham could hook into a bonus Tope.
Undulate Rays have been caught in decent numbers especially from Widewater, Bognor and Worthing Pier when the conditions have been right. Some small Stingrays were caught from the Pier, and a few will be likely catches from beaches such as Ferring and East Preston. Thornbacks could be caught from venues such as Seaford, Hove, and Bognor in darkness.
Black Bream reappeared from venues as the water clarity improved, and numbers should continue to increase during settled weather. Most of the Black Bream being caught do seem to be sizable now with smaller ones replacing them towards the end of the summer.
Some reasonable sized Bass have been caught to baits during the past week with good numbers around the 3lb mark and if the sea is calm for the week ahead with good water clarity lure fishing should be worthwhile especially at dawn and dusk. Bass can be caught a wide variety of baits often dictated by the venues. Bass fishing can be worthwhile in very shallow water when a surf is running, and live baiting can be successful when fishing from structures.
Again, Brighton Marina has seen the vast majority of better sized Congers caught recently although there has been plenty of very small straps from other venues in darkness.
With an improved weather forecast and light winds this should bring back the smaller summer species which tend not to show so much when the sea is rough and dirty. Mackerel could be a possibility later in the week most likely from the Marina and maybe the Harbour. A few Gurnards have made an appearance, and Mullet can be caught from the rivers or from the beaches.
There are still flatfish to be caught locally with Kingston Beach producing some good numbers of decent sized Flounders, Plaice are likely to be caught from Brighton, Hove and Shoreham to worm baits plus there are still a few Dabs about and Sole catches should increase in the coming weeks.
The other species which have figured in local catches include lots of Dogfish, small Bull Huss, even some Whiting, a few Pout and Silver Eels.
