West Sussex Catch Report - 26th April 2026

West Sussex Catch Report - 26th April 2026

Report by David Lewis

Good evening, luckily in Sussex at this time of year anglers are gifted the opportunity of targeting a vast amount of different species and the past week has proved this with some superb Stingrays caught whilst anglers fishing to target Plaice, Bream etc are all finding good numbers of sizable fish and even a few Squid and Cuttles made an appearance so for the angler wishing to fish this week you have plenty of options so why not get the rods out and give it ago.

Here are Worthing high tides times for the week ahead:

  • Monday 27th April: 09:08 (5.0m), 21:38 (5.4m)
  • Tuesday 28th April: 10:01 (5.3m), 22:25 (5.6m)
  • Wednesday 29th April: 10:44 (5.5m), 23:06 (5.8m)
  • Thursday 30th April: 11:22 (5.7m), 23:42 (5.9m)
  • Friday 1st May:  11:58 (5.7m)
  • Saturday 2nd May: 00:16 (5.9m), 12:33 (5.8m)

The weather has been mainly dry, sunny with a brisk easterly wind and pleasantly warm. Similar conditions are predicted for next week.

The past week has seen a few more Stingrays caught which are most likely to show from venues around Bognor with Aldwick, Felpham, Pagham, Climping all venues that regularly produce Stingers this time of year.
Other species of Rays are also being caught including Thornbacks and Undulates and both Small Eyed Rays and Blondes are occasionally landed.

Black Bream have moved inshore with some good-sized fish caught with Brighton Marina seeing a few taken on the daytime tides and often beaches west towards Pagham and Selsey East Beach can see good fishing in darkness in calm conditions with clear water.

Again, the best of local Plaice fishing is from Brighton with the East Arm on the Marina and the beaches near Banjo producing frequent catches of decent sized fish. Other venues such as Hove, Shoreham and Seaford also worth trying and on most beaches casting at range is often an advantage in finding more fish. Catches of Sole are on the increase with some nice sized ones from Shoreham and Brighton and a few Flounders, Dabs and the occasional Turbot are also possible, and Brighton Marina saw a Top Knot caught.

Last week also at Brighton Marina a few Cuttlefish and Squid were caught, and other venues can be worth targeting them in the right conditions.

When the water is coloured Dogfish can appear to be the dominant species whereas if the water is clear they are more frequently caught in darkness.

It should not be too long before Smoothounds arrive in numbers but now a few are showing with some decent fish caught from Eastbourne and venues such at Selsey, Pagham and Bracklesham should see the first of the big packs that arrive usually in May. Plenty of small Hounds have been caught throughout the region.

Whilst the sea is calm and clear its possible a few Mackerel could be caught along with Garfish and other species such as Wrasse and Gurnards. Mullet are in the local rivers and likely from structures such as the Marina and harbour.

It should not be too long before Bass become caught more frequently with a few sizable fish showing now but seemingly very few Schoolies. The rivers have seen some good fish caught on peeler crab baits and lure fishing maybe worthwhile in the right conditions.

Other species featuring in catches includes Congers, Whiting, Herring, Pouts, Gilt Head Bream, Rockling and Silver Eels plus smaller species such as Blennies and Bullheads.
