West Sussex Catch Report - 24th November 2024

West Sussex Catch Report - 24th November 2024

Report by David Lewis

Good evening, in all the years of reporting local catches this is the very first week where there has been very little worth reporting on mainly due to the bad weather, but this recent storm could be what was needed to liven the fishing up locally so why not get the rods out and give it a try. So, for this week only the pictures are showing Worthing Pier repair work which started last week.

Here are Worthing high tides times for the week ahead:

  • Monday 25th November: 06:50 (4.6m), 19:19 (4.4m)
  • Tuesday 26th November: 07:49 (4.8m), 20:13 (4.7m)
  • Wednesday 27th November: 08:37 (5.1m), 20:58 (5.0m)
  • Thursday 28th November: 09:18 (5.4m), 21:38 (5.3m)
  • Friday 29th November:  09:54 (5.6m), 22:15 (5.6m)
  • Saturday 30th November: 10:29 (5.7m), 22:50 (5.7m)

Work began last week during the settled weather on the bigger low tides on Worthing Pier which has been closed since mid-October due to structural damage. The repair work is yet to be completed so no opening date is known but updates can be found at For the latest updates visit https://www.adur-worthing.gov.uk/worthing-pier-temporary.../.

The weather lately has been mixed with cold settled weather at the start of last week yet as the weekend arrived milder, wetter and strong winds arrived. The sea state changed from relatively calm and clear to very rough and dirty. Next week the winds should ease, and generally better weather is forecast.

Despite the arrival of Storm Bert during the weekend, it is probably what was required to liven up the fishing locally and give anglers the chance of targeting some of the bigger species with Congers, Rays and Bass likely to show.

Until now the conditions have not been ideal for big Congers, but we are now at the time of year and after the winds and coloured seas decent fish up to 30lb could be caught locally judging by previous years.

Best venues to target Rays would be from Selsey east beach, Pagham or from Eastbourne with Thornbacks and the odd Undulate likely to show. Lancing and Aldwick also liable to produce fish once the sea state ease.

Conditions now could mean the arrival of the vast Whiting shoals which up till now have been rather sparce and Dogfish should also turn up in numbers with coloured water meaning both species should be caught during both day and nighttime tides The occasional Bull Huss is also a slight possibility and other species likely to appear include Pout, Silver Eels and small Hounds.

Bass will be a worthwhile target next week and some decent sized Bass are likely to show from most venues with some fishing well over low water with a surf running whereas they will also be caught in the lower stretches of the rivers and as usual from Brighton Marina and Shoreham Harbour.

The recent strong winds and coloured seas could see the lingering summer species finally move off although they will remain a slight possibility from venues such as Brighton Marina if the water clears during the next settled spell. Squid are not likely to feature in catches unless the sea eases and clarity improves.

Anglers wishing to target flatfish will find some Flounders in the local rivers especially in the Adur to red rag baits and other venues to try include Kingston Beach. Once the sea settles down and the beaches become fishable expect a few Flounders, Plaice, Dabs and Sole to be caught to worm baits with Brighton Marina east arm worth targeting Sole in coloured water in the daytime.
