West Sussex Catch Report - 17th November 2024
Report By David Lewis
Good evening, another week where most anglers’ attention has switched to catching Squid rather than fish and although the fishing has been rather slow lately there still are some good fish to be caught locally so why not get the rods out and give it ago.
Here are Worthing high tides times for the week ahead:
- Monday 18th November: 00:13 (6.3m), 12:28 (6.3m)
- Tuesday 19th November: 01:03 (6.1m), 13:15 (6.0m)
- Wednesday 20th November: 01:52 (5.8m), 14:03 (5.7m)
- Thursday 21st November: 02:40 (5.5m), 14:52 (5.3m)
- Friday 22nd November: 03:31 (5.1m), 15:45 (4.9m)
- Saturday 23rd November: 04:28 (4.8m), 16:49 (4.5m)
The weather lately has continued to be settled with very light winds and mainly cloudy days with temperatures dropping considerably at night. The sea remains calm and clear with good water clarity. Next week is looking windier with some unsettled weather expected which could alter the fishing and sea conditions.
Another week has passed where Squid continue to be prolific inshore with venues from Brighton to Worthing seeing huge numbers present. Brighton Marina west arm remains the most consistent spot to target them with up to 60 Squid achievable on some tides. The average Squid size is certainly bigger than the Squids which were showing a month or so ago. Along with the Squid a few bonus Cuttlefish are also being caught and majority are also caught on Squid Jigs. Beaches with good clarity have also produced reasonable catches and the sheer number of Squid has also resulted in a lack of fish in their vicinity.
Some decent sized Bass have shown up during the past week with Brighton Marina east arm seeing a few fish caught and the local rivers can fish well in the lower stretches. Bass have been caught from the beaches too and majority of fish do seem to be sizable.
A few lingering summer species were caught but not in numbers with the odd Mullet, Garfish, Mackerel which have been caught mainly from either Brighton or Shoreham. Big Mullet shoals have been spotted in the rivers and around structures such as Palace Pier.
One of the best catches lately is a superb 4lb 1oz Turbot caught at the weekend from Brighton Marina. Anglers wanting to target flatfish can find a few Flounders from the River Adur to red rags baits and some small Plaice from the beaches. The occasional Sole or Dab is also a possibility.
Whiting have been caught in reasonable numbers from East Preston and Bognor along with some Dogfish but in general most venues are Whiting free at present. A few Pouts have been caught as have the occasional Pollock. Some tiny Smoothounds have also been appearing on worm baits.
Whilst the water remains clear you may find fishing during darkness increases your chances of catching some species such as small Congers, Sole, or Rays.
